In 1987, Jonathan landed the role that would make him world-famous, that of William T. Riker on "Star Trek: The Next Generation". When he was preparing for his audition for the role of Commander William T. Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation, he had to watch videotapes from the original episodes because he knew nothing about the original Star Trek series. He would go on to appear in 176 episodes of the series in addition to several movies based on the show. He is one of only two Star Trek regulars to appear on four different Star Trek series (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise).

Directing Career

In 1990, Jonathan moved behind the camera and began directing episodes of The Next Generation. He also directed episodes of Star Trek spinoffs Deep Space Nine and Voyager.
